Avalakki Oggarane / Poha mixture/ Flattened Rice mixture

Mysore cookbook
Avalakki or Poha is well known as a light breakfast in Indian cuisine. The same Poha / Avalakki can be turned into a tea time snack, with the addition of few more ingredients, to give it an amazing flavour. This is the most simplest snack one can make and enjoy guilt-free ( compared to the deep -fried snacks) with evening tea / coffee. It is prepared the same way as we prepare ಕಡಲೇಪುರಿ ಒಗ್ಗರಣೆ  . So let's see how it's made.

Ingredients :
  • Avalakki/ Poha ( thin variety) - 4 cups
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Peanuts - 1/4 cup
  • Cashews - few
  • Roasted gram ( ಹುರಿಗಡಲೆ ) - 1/4 cup
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Red chillies - 5 ( or as required), broken
  • Dry coconut - 1/4 th of a whole one, cut into thin slices
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Oil - 3 - 4 tbsps
  • Salt - 1 1/2 tsp or as required
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
Preparing Avalakki Oggarane / Flattened rice mixture:
  •  In a thick bottomed pan, heat the oil and then add mustard seeds.
  • When they crackle, add peanuts and fry for 2 minutes, in low flame.
  • Add in the roasted gram , cashews, curry leaves, red chillies and dry coconut. Fry everything until it turns light brown.
  • Then add the turmeric powder, salt and fry for a minute.
  • Finally add in the cleaned Poha and mix well. Check the salt and add sugar. Continue to roast until the Poha becomes crisp. This takes around 5 to 6 minutes. Take care not to mix too much as the poha will break.
  • Once the Poha has become crisp, take it off the flame and allow it to cool. Once cooled, store it in an air tight container. It can be served in the evenings along with tea.. They both make a perfect combination.

So, as you might have noticed, it doesn't require too many ingredients and even time to make this. Once made, this can be used up to 2 to 3 weeks..
